paris. i built this one backwards — the photograph first, then the arc drawn back into it by hand.
the monument is worked in watercolor ink, oil pastel, and ink over collaged paper: every detail along the cornice, the relief panels, the dark inside the vault. the traffic below stays photographic — blurred, anonymous, moving. the sky is loose gray wash.
what i wanted was the feeling of standing there. the city goes on around you, fast and indifferent, and the stone just holds. hand-worked things read sharper than everything rushing past them. i think that's true of people, too.
