$3,140.00

painting, acrylic on canvas

24 W x 36 H in

ready to hang

mixed media on gallery-wrapped canvas. arrives ready to hang.

i painted the father of psychoanalysis in grayscale and gave him a pencil where the cigar used to be. freud is holding the instrument of what he'd actually be remembered for — the writing. hundreds of papers, decades of it.

above him the mind opens. a nebula in rose and violet, spray paint layered until the surface felt like distance itself.

two collaged figures rise out of it, seemingly from a dream — entangled, unresolved. the desires freud insisted live below the surface, surfacing anyway.

the brain is the only part of him that isn't flat. i sculpted it in polymer clay and set it in relief on the canvas, so the thinking sits physically on top of the picture.

i chose mixed media because the subconscious isn't one material. it's a collage — fragments, textures, things that don't belong together arriving in the same frame.

what i hope you feel is the closeness between studying the subconscious and living inside it.
