15 × 20 in.
signed and dated 2013, lower right.
ready to frame.
painted in 2013, from a small stuffed toy that hung in my studio by a thin loop of thread. he is quartered into color — chartreuse, yellow, white, pale blue — hood up, cheeks round and pink, his mouth set in a smile.
i chose oil on cold press illustration board because the surface takes paint quickly and holds the brush honestly. the green strokes down the left edge are loose, almost wind. everything around him moves fast. he is the only thing i slowed down for.
the title arrived before i understood it. a child sees a toy. later, the same person looks again and sees the smallness, the suspension, the cheerfulness that was required of him.
i hope he feels tender rather than sad — the way old things do once we've found them again. this was my toy story moment.
15 × 20 in. signed and lower right. unframed, rigid board, ships flat. float mounting or a simple frame with spacers suits it best.
