i painted her the year i was learning that stillness could be a kind of armor. she sits against flat blue-gray, hair swept up into a crest that darkens at the root and burns pale at the tips, shoulders buried in fur. the light hits hard from the left — one half of her face warm, the other dropped into shadow — and she doesn't soften for it. she looks back.
the fur and the hair are painted the same way: fast directional strokes, no blending, every mark left where it landed. the face is the only quiet place in the picture. i wanted that friction — all that texture moving around a woman who isn't moving at all.
acrylic on board let me move fast, which mattered. this is what unbothered looks like to me: not hardness, not indifference. just a woman who has stopped explaining herself.
for the unbothered and unapologetic women rebuilding themselves.
